I just got back from the docs. I have a pretty decent back spasm. The doctor prescribed bed rest and to minimize heavy lifting. She also prescribed Vicoden. I had to call in sick to work two hours before I was scheduled, my boss is not happy. The worst part is; I put in for a promotion from driver to parts specialist last week and the district manager is always in on Wednesdays, so I have to wait till next week to hear what comes of that

I feel your pain...literally. I busted a lumbar disc about a month ago and have had some crazy muscle spasms. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to be prescribed anything but heavy amounts of ibuprofen seem to help.
It sucks having to rest, but give yourself some time to heal and it will help things along. I’ve found that heat pads help, and a lumbar support pad helps me when I’ve got to sit for a long time. Not sure if that will be applicable in your case, but I hope it helps.

There really isn’t much else you can do other than numb the pain and (try) to sleep it off. I’d suggest looking into physiotherapy or perhaps finding a chiropractor to try and minimize the issues in the future. Even just regular stretches can help, and I’d think a professional could easily tell you what you need to keep the lower back at least reasonably healthy.
Hopefully your boss understands - health issues don't wait for anything or anyone. Get well soon.

Along with bad eyesight and a rotten prostate, I also inherited by father’s weak back. So I know all about back spasms. The first one had me laid out on the floor for 5 hours before I finally called an ambulance. A couple valiums in the ER and they sent me home, though I could barely walk, even with a walker. The doctor said his only goal was to make it so I could get up to go to the bathroom.
But what I learned in my subsequent back spasms is that the only thing that really made them go away was moving. Find a chair with a high back that you can sit comfortably in. Get a cane or walking stick (I use a section of closet bar that I’ve put duct tape on for grip). Realize that when you stand up or sit down, it is going to hurt . Probably like hell. But then the pain will stop as the muscle spasm relaxes. Then start walking. Seriously, walking and getting up and down are, at least for me, the fastest way to get over a back spasm. Baclofen (muscle relaxer) and Tylenol do nothing.
I would also suggest sleeping on your side with a small pillow between your knees. That helps keep your back straight at night. In the morning, slide over til your feet are off the bed and use your stick to push you up in a sitting position. Then use your stick to stand up. You can also use the stick to work light switches and flush the toilet. But above all, my advice is simply to keep moving.
I hope your feel better soon. These things suck, but they are transitory.

I feel you, I dislocated a rib over break and have been getting muscle spasms for a while now (had problems before dislocated rib). I recommend getting a foam roller and rolling out your back and using a heating pad a lot.
But your whole back instead of just the upper.

No, not a chiropractor! They’re quacks and suck your money. Source: my sister who’s a real doctor.

I’ve heard that before, too - the person with perpetual back pain sees chiropractor perpetually. I've never personally had to visit one but those that do never seem to stop.

I strongly advise you to treat the Vicoden with a lot of respect. Only use it if absolutely needed... and as minimally as possible.
It’s very strong and very addictive. It’s more or less a legalized synthetic form of Heroin.

Yeah, we have a chiro/PT who sponsors my running group. I went to him once about some ankle issues and he kept insisting on trying to pop my upper back - which is bolted together from a bike wreck. Not ok.
